Legal Momentum, the nation’s first and longest-serving women’s advocacy organization, applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for the swift passage of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) of 2021 as a crucial, overdue, and positive step towards better protecting all survivors of gender-based violence.
Legal Momentum, originally founded as the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, worked closely with then-President Biden in crafting the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, the original landmark legislation that provided crucial funding of resources and defined legal recourse for victims.
Each subsequent reauthorization of VAWA provides an opportunity to improve our response and meet the real and current needs of victims and survivors. We are thrilled to continue to be a leading voice in implementing critical enhancements and investments to better serve all survivors and impacted communities.
With bipartisan support in the House, we look forward to advocating for VAWA to move forward in the Senate, and ultimately the special moment when President Biden can sign it into law after years of dedicated stewardship. Legal Momentum encourages all supporters to consider contacting their US Senator and urge their support for the bill.
