North Carolina does not provide additional protections to the federal law.

Pregnancy-related Disability Accommodation

North Carolina does not specifically accommodate pregnancy or its attendant medical conditions as a disability.

Breastfeeding Rights

A woman is allowed to breastfeed in any public or private location. Breastfeeding does not violate indecent exposure laws. It is unclear whether this authorization extends to a woman’s place of employment.

Family and Childcare Leave Laws

Public sector employees may be eligible for paid sick time to care for family members.

Employees who lose their jobs because of disability, illness, or to take care of a family member may still be eligible for unemployment insurance.

Parents of school-aged children are entitled to four hours per year of unpaid leave to attend school activities.
