Carol Robles-Román Receives ABA’s Sharon L. Corbitt Award for Dedication to Victims of Domestic Violence

Thursday, August 10, 2017

The American Bar Association’s Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence is honoring Legal Momentum’s President and CEO Carol Robles-Román with the 2017 Sharon L. Corbitt Award. The annual award recognizes a lawyer who demonstrates exemplary service to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking, in the spirit of Sharon L. Corbitt.

Carol’s legal career is one of advocacy and action on behalf of the victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual assault. As Legal Momentum’s leader since April 2014, Carol spearheaded action against online sexual exploitation of vulnerable women and girls and helped to pass New York State’s groundbreaking “Enough Is Enough” law that comprehensively addresses the prevention of sexual assault on campus and its consequences. She co-chairs the New York City Council’s Young Women’s Initiative, a first-of-its-kind effort to address the systemic challenges facing young women of color in the city and empower them to thrive. In addition, she has overseen Legal Momentum’s work to educate judges, justice system professionals, and victim advocates on the realities of sexual assault and domestic violence and how to help victims effectively navigate the criminal justice system.

Prior to joining Legal Momentum, Carol was Deputy Mayor and Counsel to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for 12 years. In that role, she worked with corporations, courts, community leaders, advocates, government officials and policy experts to bring about several public-private partnerships and operational reforms related to sexual and domestic violence and human trafficking. These included creating innovative, state-of-the- art Family Justice Centers whose model is now replicated worldwide, and leading the city’s “Let’s Call an End to Human Trafficking” initiative.

Carol is a nationally recognized public speaker and appears regularly in the media, speaking about national and international trends in the law and courts, women’s rights, immigration, human trafficking and domestic violence. Carol is also active in global, national, and local partnerships that enhance access to justice.

The award breakfast, hosted by the ABA Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, will take place during the ABA’s Annual Meeting on Friday, August 11, 2017 in New York City.
